Here's some of the resources I have when teaching about matter. In my unit on matter I go through the basics of matter, properties of matter, states of matter, etc. It is kind of a broad unit but it provides a nice introduction into the chemistry side of Physical Science. Start broad, then narrow things down.
Notes: Classification of Matter States of Matter Properties of Fluids Behavior of Gases Other Resources Crazy Colloid Lab: Students make a fun and affordable type of "slime" from cornstarch, water and a few drops of food coloring. This is one of the first labs I do in my class and it makes students fall in love with my class (okay, not really, but they have lots of fun with it because it's a bit messy). Composition of Matter Worksheet (TpT): Students complete this worksheet the same day I give the Classification of Matter notes. Since I teach block classes I do those notes, the crazy colloid lab, and this worksheet on the same day. An answer key is included with the worksheet and they go great with the notes. Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes worksheet: I recently found this worksheet and haven't used it. But I like it a lot and plan to use it in the future. Density Worksheet: A nice and to the point Density calculation practice sheet. Soda Can Density Lab (TpT): Students determine the density of different types of soda cans. You'll need giant graduated cylinders, water, and different types of unopened soda cans. Foil Boat Lab (TpT): students build a boat out of a piece of foil and then place as many marbles, pennies or other objects in it as possible until it starts to sink. Its a fun and competitive lab that students love Viscosity Races (TpT): students learn about viscosity during this lab. |
