During the first few days of school there are those standard things we all go over. Or at least, I do, and I think others go over too? Maybe? The first day of school I go over the syllabus, rules, I show students my website so they know all the great tools I have on there for them and then we do some team builders. Then I spend the next couple of days going over lab safety, the metric system, and learning to write lab reports. Below are a few resources for these first few days of school.
Power Point Notes:
Lab Safety
Metric System
Scientific Method
How to write a lab report (goes with lab report sheet below)
Other Resources:
Lab Safety Video: This video was made by a teacher at a private school somewhere - it is not me! I like this one because it's entertaining (I know, I know, lab safety should be serious, not funny, but it gets boring ya know). So I show my students this video on lab safety day.
Lab Safety Contract: This is the Flinn Contract that my school uses. Just wanted to share it incase you haven't seen it. It has way more than I need to worry about in my class, but too much is good.
Spongebob Lab Safety: This is not my worksheet. It has a scenario that includes everyone's favorite sponge and has students identify lab safety violations.
Lab Safety Cartoon: This is not my cartoon. Students identify lab safety violations and then answer a few questions. I don't absolutely love the cartoon (some of it is hard for the students to see) but I'm too lazy right now to draw my own (one day maybe I will).
Lab Report Sheet: I use this sheet to help my students format their lab report. Why? Because when I don't they forget parts or it's extra sloppy, etc. Plus most of them are new to writing lab reports so this helps set a good lab report writing foundation for future classes.
Simpsons Scientific Method Worksheet: This is an edited version of someone else's worksheet (called Simpsons Variable Worksheet).
Metrics Worksheet (TpT): This worksheet is a great practice sheet for students to do after you go over the metric system notes. It has a little bit more than just conversions which is nice. Most worksheets I've found skip over a few basics that some students just don't pick up on right away. So this sheet helps build a nice foundation to build on.
Metric Lab Stations (TpT): I love these metric lab stations. Students work in groups to complete 7 stations. Some stations are hands on, measuring and weighing things and others are simple worksheets in disguise! Students are also getting TONS of metric conversion practice. I have students complete one student sheet per group to save on the grading.
Splatter Lab: I got this lab from a coworker but I honestly don't know if he wrote it or not. I did edit his original one anyway. But I use this lab on the day I teach students how to write a proper lab report. So students get to conduct a lab and then write a report on it. You only need a meter stick, butcher or bulletin board paper (or other paper works well too), droppers, food coloring and water.
